“I’M NOT BEING PAID PROPERLY, BUT I’M NOT A COMPLAINER”
June 19, 2015
You work overtime every day, but your employer says he doesn’t have to pay you extra because you’re salaried. Or you worked all night, but your employer gives you an afternoon off in the following week to make up for it instead of paying you overtime.
Or maybe you’re on call whenever you’re not in the office. You’re expected to call back within 10 minutes any time you get a call. You’re not getting paid anything for your on-call time.
Maybe your employer tells you you’re an independent contractor and so you’re not entitled to benefits. Or perhaps you haven’t been paid for months, and the employer who owes you $10,000 has stopped taking your calls.
All of these situations may violate the law, but employees are too often reluctant to do anything about it because they don’t want to rock the boat or cause problems. But there are good reasons to do something besides the sheer unfairness of employers cheating their workers. For instance:
- If your employer is cheating you, he is probably cheating your co-workers as well.
- Your family benefits if you’re paid fairly. Your spouse and your kids are dependent on the wages you earn, so stand up for your right to be paid fairly!
- Employers who underpay their employees are bad for the economy in general. The income inequality we keep hearing about is partly driven by companies that underpay their workers. The economy is stronger when workers are paid the wages that they are entitled to.
If you’re being underpaid, you can take action to resolve the situation. Don’t be afraid to rock the boat – otherwise, you risk being pushed around by your employer for the duration of your work with him or her. We offer a completely free and confidential consultation, so you don’t have to worry about your boss finding out. And even if he or she did find out, it’s illegal to retaliate against you in any way, shape, or form.
Fair wages benefit everyone (except employers who want to cheat). Contact us today to learn more… because you work too hard to get cheated out of your wages!
